ToweringCu stands for towering cumulus, which is a type of cumulus cloud that rises up so high that it is almost a cumulonimbus cloud (thunderstorm cloud). Fair weather cumulus is usually constrained by an atmospheric inversion, therefore does not go high into the atmosphere. Cumulonimbus goes very high in the atmosphere and can produce the nasty events that are associated with thunderstorms.
